What Do Hospitals Do with Amputated Body Parts?
Before any body part is amputated, it must be deemed diseased or a danger to the rest of the body; hence the need for its permanent removal.
After surgery, there are usually two options available to the patient:
1. The patient or their close relatives are asked to collect the amputated part for burial or disposal, as they wish.
2. They may give consent for the hospital to handle the disposal.
Now, because many Nigerians are deeply religious and, in some cases, superstitious, most patients prefer to collect the body part themselves for disposal; just to avoid any perceived “spiritual” consequences ???. In such cases, the hospital takes proper care to package the part, using formalin and other preservatives, and seals it in a container before handing it over to the patient or their close relatives.
On the other hand, some patients prefer the hospital to dispose of the part for them, either because they can’t bear the sight of a human body part or simply don’t know what to do with it.
In this case, the hospital typically considers three options:
1. Bury the part in a shallow pit in a designated area.
2. If there’s a research facility nearby, the part may be donated for scientific study.
3. In hospitals with incinerators, the part is cremated and disposed of accordingly.
Ultimately, what happens to the amputated part depends on the patient's or close relatives’ decision, the hospital’s policy, and the available facilities.
