Four groups of people who should avoid cold water.

No doubt, cold water can be refreshing when one is thirsty, but it is not ideal for everyone, especially people dealing with certain health conditions.

As a rejoinder to my earlier post about cold water, I am writing this to clarify that, although cold water may not be the cause of certain ailments like cough, catarrh, pneumonia, etc. but it can worsen such conditions if you already suffer from them.

So, here are four groups of people who should avoid cold water/drinks as much as possible or reduce their intake:

1. People with Pneumonia:

Cold water doesn't cause pneumonia. But Cold water can worsen symptoms like chest pain, coughing, and difficulty breathing for people who have pneumonia. It may also make mucus thicker, slowing recovery and putting more strain on the lungs.

2. People with Asthma:

Also, I must state that coke water/drinks don't cause asthma, but Cold drinks can trigger airway spasms in people with asthma, leading to tightness in the chest, wheezing, or coughing. Some also report that it worsens asthma attacks during cold weather.

3. People with Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):

People with hypertension should avoid cold drinks because they can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, cause constriction in blood vessels, and increase workload on the heart which can cause a sudden spike in blood pressure.

4. People with Stomach Ulcers:

For people suffering from stomach ulcer, cold water can irritate the stomach lining, it can slow digestion, and worsen ulcer symptoms like pain or bloating.

Cold water can also trigger muscle spasms in the digestive tract.

In conclusion: If you fall into any of these categories, we advise that you take lukewarm or room-temperature water as often as possible in order to avoid complications.

Also, if you have any concerns, please do well to talk to your doctor about it.
