Five Reasons To Avoid Zobo (Hibiscus Drink) When Pregnant

Zobo which is a popular drink made from hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa), has been found to pose some risks to women during pregnancy, some of which include:

1. Triggering of Uterine Contractions:

Hibiscus has emmenagogue properties, this means that it has the ability to stimulate uterine contractions which can increase the risk of miscarriage, especially in the first trimester.

2. It can Disrupt Hormonal Balance:

Hibiscus contains phytoestrogens that can mimic estrogen in the body, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances. This may interfere with pregnancy maintenance and even fetal development.

3. It can Impair Iron Absorption:

Compounds in hibiscus can inhibit the absorption of non-heme iron (from plant sources), increasing the risk of anemia which is a condition already common in pregnancy.

4. It can Blood Pressure:

Hibiscus can reduce blood pressure, which might lead to dizziness or fainting in pregnant women, especially those with already low blood pressure.

5. It can lead to Potential Fetal Effects:

Animal studies have shown that hibiscus consumption during pregnancy may lead to delayed puberty and increased obesity risk in offsprings.

N.B:
While zobo is known to have nutritional and health benefits to the body, pregnant women are strongly advised to avoid it because of the potential risks it poses to then, and should consult their healthcare providers if they desire safe dietary choices during pregnancy.
